Leicester Tigers star Ben Youngs visited Leicester General Hospital last Friday, April 19, to team up with the Royal Voluntary Service, helping support the national charity in their work with the NHS.

Youngs was visiting the hospital as part of the 50th anniversary of their iconic Hospital Trolley, wheeling the trolley around the various wards and offering a range of sweet treats to patients.

The purpose of the volunteers isn't just based around what's on offer on the trolley but within the interactions with patients at the hospital, many of whom are delighted to see a friendly face and enjoy a sit down and chat.

This is especially true of those who may not have so many regular visitors from their own family and friends.

When asked about the day, Youngs said "It's been very enjoyable. The trolley is a great example of people giving up their time to help others; some people need a conversation, some need a smile on their face and the trolley helps get them in the room.

"It's that conduit, to get you through the door to interact with people, to chat, to show empathy and to show care to those who need it.

"It's been an incredibly humbling experience."

Asked about the celebration of the Royal Voluntary Service and the 50th year of the iconic trolley, Youngs congratulated all volunteers who had given up their time over the last 50 years, urging those who had been involved to be proud of their voluntary work and the impact it has had for so many.
